DXY (Dollar Index)

Glossary · Macro & Cycles

DXY is the US Dollar Index — the dollar's value against six major currencies, with the euro at roughly 58% of the basket. Crypto watches it because dollar strength tightens global liquidity: a rising DXY has historically pressured Bitcoin and risk assets, while a falling DXY often accompanies crypto rallies.

"When DXY's pumping, your bags usually aren't — the dollar is the one chart your altcoin can't ignore."

Six currencies, one number — and the euro is 57.6% of the basket, so DXY mostly moves inverse to EUR/USD. It runs on Fed rate expectations: hawkish surprises at CPI and FOMC push it up, easing expectations pull it down. The 2022 lesson is the clean one — DXY topped near 115 in September 2022 while crypto was carving its cycle lows; the dollar peak and the risk-asset bottom landed within weeks of each other.

The misread is treating DXY as an entry signal. The BTC-DXY inverse correlation is real over months but unreliable over hours — it flips regularly, and trading BTC off every DXY tick just adds noise. Use it as a regime filter: a trending DXY tells you which way the macro wind blows and how much size to carry, and the moves that matter cluster around macro prints, not quiet drift. Know the data calendar before it moves your chart for you.
