Deleveraging Event
Glossary · Derivatives
A deleveraging event is a sharp, market-wide drop in open interest as leveraged positions are liquidated or closed in a short window — a cascade at scale. Price overshoots because the selling is forced, funding resets toward zero, and the market that emerges has far less leverage in it. They mark local extremes more reliably than most signals.
"Ten billion of open interest vanishes in an afternoon and everyone calls it a crash. It is the market taking the leverage out — usually the healthiest thing that happened all month."
The anatomy: a catalyst pushes price through a band of liquidation levels; each liquidation is a market order that hits the next band; funding, which had been positive for weeks, flips negative as the perp trades under spot; open interest drops 15-30% in hours. The liquidation tape shows it as a cascade hour that carries a quarter of the day's total. Afterwards, with the leverage gone, the same news that would have caused a 10% move causes a 2% move.
How to trade it: not the first hour. The forced selling ends when the liquidations stop printing and funding has reset — our liquidations page shows both — and the reversal that follows is often violent because the sellers were forced, not convinced. The trap is buying the first dip in a cascade; the second and third bands of liquidations are still below.
