Capitulation
Glossary · Macro & Cycles
Capitulation is the stage of a decline where exhausted holders sell at any price, producing a high-volume flush that often marks a major low. Telltales include spiking volume, cascading liquidations, deeply negative funding, extreme fear readings, and long-dormant coins moving at a loss. It ends when the forced sellers run out.
"The bottom prints when the last diamond hands crack — and someone's always there to buy what they drop."
The fingerprint repeats: volume running 3-5x average on the breakdown, long liquidations cascading, funding flipping deeply negative, Fear & Greed in single digits, and old coins moving on-chain at a loss as long-term holders finally fold. March 2020 compressed it into two days — BTC roughly halved to under $4,000. June 2022 (Celsius, 3AC) flushed to $17.6k; FTX in November 2022 printed $15.5k. Each flush was forced selling, and forced selling exhausts itself.
The trap is calling it early — every leg down looks like 'the' capitulation while you're inside it, and 2022 offered several convincing fakes before the real one. Bottoms are usually a process, not a candle: the flush, then weeks of dull chop that shakes out the early heroes. Skip the leveraged knife-catch — the final wick exists to take those traders out. Scale in with a plan and an invalidation level, and let the forced sellers hand you the position they never wanted to sell.
