Wash Trading
Glossary · Market Structure
Wash trading is buying and selling the same asset with yourself, or with a colluding party, to manufacture volume without any change in ownership. It inflates reported turnover, games rankings that reward volume and makes a market look liquid when it is not. Small-venue and new-token volume is frequently mostly wash.
"Volume you can buy is volume that means nothing. If the same 200 wallets trade a coin back and forth all day, the chart is a theatre set."
The signatures: volume out of proportion to liquidity depth, round-trip trades of identical size seconds apart, a buy/sell ratio pinned near 1.0 all day, and volume that vanishes when incentives stop. On DEX memecoins it takes the form of bots cycling a token to hit trending lists; on small exchanges it fills leaderboards. A fair check is volume divided by liquidity: a pool with $40K of liquidity and $3M of daily volume is either the trade of the year or a wash machine.
Why it matters to a trader: wash volume produces breakouts with no one behind them and levels with no memory. Our meme tape flags thin liquidity against market cap and sells outnumbering buys for this reason, and the price tape drops venues whose quote sits a quarter away from everyone else. Trust prints across several venues over volume on one.
