Venue Arbitrage
Glossary · Market Structure
Venue arbitrage is buying an asset on the exchange where it is cheapest and selling where it is dearest at the same moment, capturing the price gap. It exists because liquidity is fragmented across venues and quotes update at different speeds. The gap must clear fees, and the trade needs inventory on both sides or a transfer that outruns the gap.
"Same coin, two prices, and the market pays whoever is fastest to notice — after fees, withdrawals and the ten seconds it takes the gap to close."
Read the gap as highest bid on one venue minus lowest ask on another, as a share of the ask. Two taker fees at 0.1% each take 0.2% off before anything else; withdrawal fees and confirmation times make a pure transfer arbitrage a race most people lose. Gaps that stay open for minutes are usually a venue with withdrawal problems, a token wearing the same ticker on two chains, or a dead pair that nobody is quoting — a measurement, not a trade.
What it is good for even when you cannot execute it: it tells you where the pressure is. A coin bid up on Coinbase while offshore lags is US demand; a perp trading rich to spot on one venue is a crowded long paying funding there. Our price tape polls ten exchanges a minute and shows the buy-at and sell-at venue, the gap net of fees and how long it has been open.
