Exchange Reserves
Glossary · Whales & On-Chain
Exchange reserves are the total coins held in an exchange's known wallets — the pool immediately available to sell. Falling reserves mean supply is migrating to self-custody, historically a bullish backdrop; rising reserves mean sellable supply is building. Bitcoin exchange reserves have trended down since 2020 as ETFs and cold storage absorb coins.
"How much ammo is sitting on exchanges ready to hit the bid."
Read it as a share of supply, not a raw number: BTC on exchanges fell from roughly 17% of supply in 2020 to nearer 11-12% by 2025 as ETFs and self-custody absorbed coins. The metric depends entirely on wallet labelling — when a data provider discovers and tags a new cold wallet, reserves 'jump' with no coins actually moving. Cross-check any sudden cliff across two providers before believing it.
'Reserves at five-year lows' is a permabull staple — it stayed true through most of 2022's drawdown too, because coins can come back to exchanges in an afternoon and OTC selling never touches the metric at all. Low reserves are context, not a floor. The read worth acting on is the flip: reserves building week after week while price pushes highs means sellable supply is being staged into strength — a classic distribution tell.
