Candle-Close Confirmation

Glossary · Technical Analysis

Candle-close confirmation means acting on a level only after a candle of the chosen timeframe has completed beyond it, rather than on a price touch mid-candle. A close through resistance confirms a breakout; a close through a stop level confirms invalidation. It filters out wicks, which are where most false signals live.

"Price touching your level is not price accepting your level. Wait for the candle to close and let the wick hunters go first."

The mechanics: on a 4h chart, a candle opening at 08:00 UTC is judged at 12:00 UTC by its close, not by the low it printed at 09:40. A stop at $97 is not hit by a wick to $96.20 if the candle closes at $97.80; it is hit by a close at $96.90.

The cost is real and worth paying: a close-based stop lets a violent candle run further against you before it fires, so the average loss on a stopped trade is larger than the level distance. What you buy is that wick-hunts no longer take you out of trades that then go to target — in our own ledger that swap was clearly positive. Use it on the timeframe of the setup, not a faster one.
